A recent segment of the program, "How It's Made," on the Science
Channel, shows player piano rolls being made, presumably at the
QRS factory. The link below will take you to the video, however,
it shows only about half of what was shown on-the-air. Normal
segments on this program are about three minutes long.

This segment ends at about time 1:45, probably because they are
re-editing the segment in response to a comment I left on the web
site about it. At that point in the segment (I watched it twice
on-air to make sure) what they are showing about lyric stencil
making, lyric printing, point cutting and tab application is
totally out-of-sync with what is being said in the voice-over.
Hopefully they will have the full segment back on-line shortly.
I believe Bob Berkman makes a cameo appearance early in the clip, but
I had to let out a hoot when they showed the transition from recording
on the marking piano (who is the guy playing it?) to the "technology"
approach showing a 5-1/4" floppy disk being put into the drive of
a truly ancient Apple computer. Is this system still in use there?
There was no clue as to when the video was shot.
On a side note, I recently ran into the son of QRS Artist Rudy Martin,
Rudy Martin Jr., in Cockeysville, Maryland. He works at a local Radio
Shack outlet store. When I have a chance I plan to interview him about
what he remembers about his father's roll making at QRS.
