Slipping Control Shaft in Half D-A Expression Box
By John Phillips

Hello, MMD. My daughter, Alison, is having a meeting of her book
club at our house tonight. Most of the members of this club are
local married ladies and some of them have expressed an interest
in my player pianos. I usually manage to find a reason to talk
about them at Alison's book club meetings, but tonight is show time!

I pedalled a roll through my Steck Half Duo-Art and found that, as
usual, the zero setting had slipped. Does anybody have any idea why
Aeolian equipped their Half Duo-Arts with just a set screw but no
lock screw? My set screw had a badly chopped about head, doubtless
due to former owners struggling with it.

I found a hex head machine screw normally used in computers, with
the correct thread, and hoped that this would enable me to secure the
shafts position. No luck; even if I conjure up the strength of ten
when tightening the set screw, the shaft still slips. It did so,
this afternoon, when I played one Duo-Art roll after re-zeroing the
expression levels.

At least this spurs me on to keep working on my Full Duo-Art, also
a Steck. Has anyone found a solution to this annoying problem?
