Artecho Player System in Packard Grand Piano
By Dave Saul
The mechanism in John Tuttle's Packard grand piano appears to be an
Artecho reproducing system, which was installed in various makes of
pianos under the Artecho name. This same system was also sold in
Wurlitzer pianos under the name Apollo.
The drawer in the Apollo version generally has much more elaborate
trim than the example pictured. But the small 4-point air motor is
obviously the same, as are the crescendo units and manifold assembly
visible under the piano.
Reprints of technical data sheets for this system should be fairly
easy to find, because they were available for some time from Player
Piano Company. The Apollo/Artecho system was an Amphion product,
and was apparently developed prior to, or around the time of, the
American Piano Company's acquisition of Amphion's assets in the years
following WW1.
