I have in my possession a roll which I believe to be a very rare
88-note roll. It's title is "Broadway Rose." The names Fried &
Spencer are indicated under the title. They could be the composer
and lyricist. It is a hand-played roll with the artist being Earl
Billings. Coincidentally (or not), the name of the company on the
label is Billings Player Roll Co. Now to why this roll is so unusual.
Following the introduction to the tune, I was surprised to see the
complete musical staff and notes printed in very clear black ink
throughout the roll. Below each note are the words to the tune.
I can fully understand why no other roll maker would go to such lengths
to produce something like this. There is the possibility of this roll
company only making very few rolls in this manner. The company name,
very appropriately, is "Staffnote." The roll, by the way was unboxed,
and in near mint condition, except for some worn edges at the leader.
So I put this question to others: Does anyone else have a roll issued
by Staffnote that shows the complete musical notation on the roll?
Maybe Q. David Bowers has seen them? Would this roll indeed be rare,
and if so, would I be able to get a high price for this roll should
I decide to sell it? I'd appreciate some feedback.
Thank you,
