"Nef" Musical Automaton in the Form of a Ship
By Craig Smith

Hi all, In the August 1999 issue of "Mechanical Music," the MBSI
Journal, I came across an interesting article by Arthur W. J. G.
Ord-Hume. In it he describes how a group in England and Europe were
constructing a reproduction of a Nef (a musical automaton in the form
of a ship). Since the three remaining Nefs are each incomplete and
unrestored, they decided to make a new one using information gleaned
from the features of the originals. I understand that the model was
used in the opening ceremony of the 'Royal Music Machine' exhibit.

I wonder if anyone knows the state of this project -- where the model
is now and if it was ever completed. I'd sure like to see the results.

Regards,

Craig Smith
