Seaside Heights' Floyd Moreland Carousel Rescued
By Rosanna Harris
We recently received information that the Seaside Heights Carousel
(Floyd Moreland Carousel) in New Jersey may not be placed for auction.
A double page centerfold in the September/October issue of Carousel
& Automatic Music News brought attention to the fact that Guernsey's
was contacted to auction the carousel either complete or in pieces.
Under the guidance of Pam Ness Myers, a group (KISS) was formed on
Facebook and the movement sprang into action. The ultimate good thing
happened and the carousel will remain spinning not far from the Casino
Pier. Check this link: http://www.seaside-heightsnj.org/2014/09/1298/
Although this is an encouraging development, we also received a
communication which indicated that there is more to be done. The
proposed land swap for the carousel still needs review and appraisals
and final Council approval. But, according to our source, it does
seem likely the carousel will be saved.
The next issue of Carrousel and Automatic Music News (CAMN) will
continue the coverage of the carousel and those who came together
to make this happen. What a relief this was for those who were
emotionally attached to the carousel, and what a victory for those who
do everything possible to preserve and protect part of our American
heritage!
