I had my Haines Ampico rebuilt recently, and just before delivery the
motor (identical to yours) started to smoke. Thinking it had or would
soon burn out, the rebuilder temporarily substituted another motor and
brought me the old one when he delivered the piano.
The new motor was not satisfactory because it wasn't mounted on felt
blocks as was the original, causing a lot of humming. So I took the
old motor to a motor shop thinking they could rewind it.
As it turned out, this was yet another case (as I believe has been
mentioned on this site before) where the insulation on some wires
had started to smoke because the governor or starting switch did not
throw out as it should. Because the motor was turned off promptly
the windings were just fine. The shop cleaned the old grease and
crud out of the starting switch (which took them a lot of time but no
difficult work) and lubricated the motor, and it's now back in service.
The cost? $50.
The shop, by the way, wasn't fazed at the thought of having to rewind
the motor, but I don't know what that would have cost.
