Packing Heavy Motors for Shipment
By Don Teach
I know the shipping problem has been discussed several times.
I would like to offer some free advice about shipping heavy items,
such as electric motors, in the mail or via UPS. Free advice is
that which costs you nothing and may be worth the same: nothing!
Never ship a motor in a box with other items as damage to the
other items is going to happen as well as damage to the motor.
Bubble wrap will not hold up the weight of motor (such as a motor
in a reproducer or nickelodeon) as the carrier bounces it around
the shipping arena. The shaft is bound to get bent or the Bakelite
electrical connectors damaged or the cast iron housing cracked. All
that has happened to motors that have been shipped to me.
Stiff Styrofoam cut to the contours of the motor and extending
beyond the housing several inches helps. The shaft should be securely
held with stiff Styrofoam. Since most motor shafts extend past the
motor housing then cut a hole in some Styrofoam and stack the Styrofoam
until the shaft is covered and then add more.
The box must be heavy cardboard or plywood and the motor in this
instance cannot move inside the box at all. If it _can_ move about
then it is just a loose hammer in a box and it will hammer its way out
of the box after damaging anything else packed in the box with it.
Do not ship a motor packed in a box with other items!
