TJ Fisher made some very interesting points about the mind-set of
today's younger folks [140801 MMDigest]. I am amazed at how many
times lately I've heard folks exclaim they are glad to find out I tune
pianos, as they can't find a piano tuner. This is good, but there
still aren't enough folks out there glad enough to actually have their
piano tuned! I'm hoping this improves over time. (I restarted my
tuning business only recently, when I was let go by the City in a
budget crisis -- which seems to be on-going, based on newspaper
accounts.)
TJ, since you don't yet have a piano, I suggest you look for a Fisher! :)
When I was going to college, I didn't yet have a player, but I found
a horde of piano rolls at a "junk shop" in the college town. I bought
then, and until the next trip home, kept them on my dorm desk (along
with some American Flyer train cars I found in the same shop). I did
soon after buy a player upright and kept it at my folks' house until
I married and had a place of my own. Of course, I still have it, and
a few more now. So don't let being a student stop you!
