When I first discovered Wurlitzer band organ roll 6509-A from 1915,
the second oldest surviving style 165 roll, in Jim Wells' collection,
only a couple of the tunes could be identified, like "It's A Long,
Long Way To Tipperary" and "I Didn't Raise My Boy To Be A Soldier."
But now, over the years, gradually one by one, all ten tunes on the
roll have been identified, even tune 8, which to my dying day I was
prepared to swear was the waltz "The Flower Of Italy." But I was
wrong, as everybody told me I was.
Thanks to everyone who helped with the identification, especially
Mikey Mills, who cracked the last two tough nuts. Because of all the
cutting and pasting done to the roll label as this or that tune became
identified, I now have produced a clean, new label. Anybody who has
a copy of roll 6509-A and would like two clean copies of the label,
send me a note and I'll mail them to you.
The titles of all ten tunes can be seen here on my website:
