I have an early Type 4 Haines Ampico A, circa 1920, with a
Brilliant-Medium-Subdued modify switch on the spoolbox. However,
it also has not only the slot beneath the bass keycheek where the
Loud-Normal-Soft (L-N-S) lever would go, there's also an active
pneumatic tube going to that location. Yet there's no lever and
no mechanism under the keycheek.
I understand that that various design changes were frequently
introduced individually, so this piano could have well been built
in the transition period between the two different modifying systems.
But it's also possible that the L-N-S device was removed as extraneous
or inoperative during a rebuild in the 1970s.
The piano is now in a very "live" room and is excessively loud, so
much so that the Subdued mode is usually still too loud. I would like
to locate and install an original L-N-S device, but am unsure how to
accurately refer to it in a solicitation, and don't know how it was
designed or constructed so am unable to attempt to fabricate a
replacement. I would appreciate any input on the subject.
