Hi MMD, Several years ago I acquired a partially restored 1906
Melville Clark player that plays four different kinds of rolls.
Upon completing the restoration it has proven to be one of the best
sounding pianos in my collection. I leave this piano set to play
65-note rolls so this piano and 65-note rolls can be demonstrated
when I give tours.
Yes, the selection of music on 65 note rolls is limited but there
is still a lot of good music on these rolls and if you hunt there
are still a lot of these rolls out there.
In a period of about a year I acquired a collection of over 700
65-note rolls. They have all been restored, boxes repaired and
new labels printed. I purchased one collection of over 300 rolls
at $1.00 per roll. Most of the remainder were found on eBay. With
luck you will find some rag rolls, many of which are fantastic.
My strong suggestion is to find a Melville Clark which will play
both 65- and 88-note rolls. Restoring the Melville Clark that plays
both makes a lot more sense than converting a 65-note player to play
88-note rolls. Yes, there are still Melville Clark players like this
out there.
Best of luck,
Tom Hutchinson
