The Arthur Junghans factory made instruments with interchangeable
cylinders with a length of 6 centimetre (= 2-3/8 inch) and a diameter
of 3 centimetre (= 1-3/16 inch) found in small wooden boxes and alarm
clocks. See the article, "Kammspielwerke der Uhrenfabrik Gebrüder
Junghans A.G. Schramberg", by Luuk Goldhoorn, in "Das mechanische
Musikinstrument" Nr. 95, April 2006.
There is a German patent Nr. 131626 valid from March 23, 1901. The
combs have 38 teeth. The iron base of the mechanism shows the number
141 and the lock-handle number 142. I have seen the following numbers
of melodies:
7 Marseillaise
12 Daisy Bell
15 Stille Nacht (Silent Night)
17 Spinn, spinn
18 Hochzeitsmarsch (Wedding march)
550 Oh! Susanna
558 (unknown)
560 Waterval (Waterfall)
562 Dann geh' ich ins Maxim, dort ist es so intim
565 Vilja Lied
568 Wilhelmus (Dutch national anthem)
571 Les cloches de Corneville
573 Hup-Marsch, Waltz
576 Lentelied (Spring-song)
580 Tra-la-la, Children's song
599 La Mattchiche (= Babette, 1905, H. Borel-Clerc)
656 Die Wacht am Rhein
684 Wein-Walzer
Each cylinder has only one melody. Who has ever seen a list of
available cylinders or other melodies for these instruments ?
Thanks and musical greetings,
Hendrik Strengers
