1913 Chickering With Prototype Ampico Player
By Perry Wingerter
Can you tell me when the Chickering piano company produced the
Anniversary Grand harp for their pianos? I have a prototype Chickering
player piano and was told by the owner that it's a 1913 Chickering with
Ampico player. I only acquired it because he passed away in November,
2013. He had restored one Chickering with Ampico player and had started
to repair the one I now have.
My friend that gave me this piano used to work for Skinner pipe organs
and he personally installed the skinner organ at Trinity church in New
York at Church and Wall Street, so he was very smart at fixing things.
If I can find the date of when they started the Anniversary Grand harp
then I could narrow the date down. I do know that they used a pump
that had wooden type levers instead of using metal.
I have everything in a sort of way. What I mean is that the drawer
under the keyboard is out and so is the keyboard. The lid is off
the case so for the time being just the harp and case is intact. So
basically this piano has this part and another part and so on and so
forth. They never set this design to production so it's one-of-a-kind
and so I have taken the job at putting this back together.
I do have some piano manuals showing me how to put it back together
but I believe it is going to take sometime before I have it up and
playing. Any help would be appreciated on finding the information
I said earlier.
Thank you,
Perry Wingerter
