Definitely have any valuable instrument crated before moving, and
supply your own moving pads or pay the seller to buy some new pads ones
to hand to the mover. U-Haul sells decent pads. Don't buy pads from
Harbor Freight -- they reek strongly like gasoline for some strange
reason!
Movers are notoriously "casual" about wrapping things in utterly filthy
pads that haven't been washed in 20 years and have been used to wrap up
barbecue grills and pianos that came out of barns and such. Why have
your just-restored treasure wrapped in them?
I've even seen movers let total derelicts sleep in the backs of trucks
(yes, using pads as blankets) to be available to help load in the
morning. And then of course there is the business of walking all over
the pads in dirty boots, and pads laid out on filthy, often pet-stained
rugs.
You get the picture. Attend to as much of the crating and/or loading of
your instrument as you can, or it will not be treated as you'd prefer!
