[ I asked Gerhard, "Chas. Davis Smith says in the Welte-Mignon
[ rollography that the artist's name was originally Heinrich Burkhard
[ (with "h"), and later his name was Henry Burkard (without "h").
[ What's the true story?"
Hi Robbie, The different spellings are confused in Germany, too. Take
a look at the address book of 1909 (in which names are according to
the birth certificate) and you can see the different possible spellings
of that name. In the Poughkeepsie Times newspaper his name changes
from article to article, but I believe the version from the birth
certificate finally went into their US passports.
Cheers,
Gerhard Dangel
[ The 1909 Freiburg city directory shows "Burkard Heinr., Musiker".
[ Other spellings in the directory are Burghardt, Burkardt, Burkart
[ (most common), Burkhard, Burkhardt and Burkhart. Whew! -- Robbie
