H. M. Higgs, Piano Roll Artist of London
By Adam Aceto
I am "raising my hand" to Ed Gaida's email about possible fictitious
pianists ["Herman Henry Wade, Piano Roll Artist" in 140308 MMDigest].
At least two jumped out at me from their "selections" published for
both solo piano and for orchestra.
Henry Marcellus Higgs was the music director at Chappell, London,
until his death in 1929. Many, many "Piano Selections" of operettas
and early musicals were created by him. An enormous library of vocal
sheet music was edited by him for publication as piano & vocal sheet
music including nearly all the greats of the London stage from
1890-1920.
Jens Bodewalt Lampe was the music director, until his death in 1929,
at Remick, New York. Not only did he arrange piano selections, but he
also edited sheet music and arranged a great number of songs for dance
band and for salon orchestra, primarily culling tunes from Remick's
extensive library of authors and compositions.
I have recently recorded an album of "Piano Selections" from 1890s to
1930s for Operetta Archives. Another album with a period orchestra of
Orchestral Selections (Potpourris) from early musicals has been
recorded and is coming out this year. See
