Hello MMD. In my recent long epistle about finding piano rolls in New
Zealand, one of which was a Solo Carola roll, I omitted to mention that
the majority of my friend's Solo Carola rolls do not have the shaft
extension on the bass end of the spool that is necessary for actuating
the Solo Carola mechanism.
If the shaft extension is not there, the mechanism treats the roll as
just another standard 88-note roll. I believe that the extensions are
fairly easily broken off, which may explain their absence on most of
my friend's rolls.
Does anyone know if an extension is easily exchanged between rolls?
Does anyone have a spare? Alternatively, if some-one could measure the
relevant dimensions, I could have one made here in Tasmania, or even
turn it up myself.
