Regulating Lost Motion in a Duo-Art Upright
By James Black

Joseph Osborne asks how to regulate lost motion in an upright Duo-Art
without removing the stack many times. This is indeed on of the more
awkward adjustments and I do not think that you can escape removing the
action a few times. I try to limit the stack removal by adjusting the
pitmans as accurately as possible on each removal and I can get away
with removing it just two or three times.

The technique I use works well enough for me on my upright Steinway K
but there may be a better way. I slide the action into place without
screwing it down and slightly rock it. This lifts the hammers that are
resting on the pitmans and, by taking notes about which lift and by how
much and which do not move, I can adjust them fairly accurately on each
removal. However, I am indeed interested to hear of other's techniques.
