Dear MMDers, On the recent thread about recordings of player piano
music, unless I missed it, I am surprised that no one has mentioned
the cassette tapes issued by Marion Roehl Recordings (MRR). There
were three albums, titled "Good Old Player Piano Music": Volume 1,
2 and 3.
There was also a "Christmas Player Piano Music" and, I think, a
"Gospel Player Piano Music" album. These were sold for many years
through the Vestal Press catalog as Marion Roehl Recordings. Later
on, the Roehls sold Marion Roehl Recordings to Dave Minor who
continued to sell these tapes and CDs. I'm not sure who acquired
Marion Roehl Recordings after Dave passed away; perhaps someone here
knows.
The MRR player piano recordings were sold only as compact cassette
tapes and were never released as CDs. Harvey was adamant about using
tunes that were in the public domain and used copyrighted material
sparingly when a tune was so popular that it would help to sell the
tapes. The recordings were made at Roehl's home, on their Standard
action Autopiano, from 88-note rolls primarily in their own collection.
For the person in the original MMD article who wanted to play some
music for his father who remembered pumping through rolls many years
ago, the Marion Roehl Recordings offer a nice selection of music that
was generally available during the heyday of the player piano.
