I've successfully arranged an entire roll of songs for the Wurlitzer
165 band organ scale. I've arranged somewhere around 100 total
Wurlitzer 165 band organ songs, but I carefully picked out and arranged
10 songs which I think go well together.
Here is the list of songs:
165-1-01 - "March/Waltz Composite"
1. The Midnight Fire Alarm (Harry J. Lincoln)
2. Homeland (Harry J. Lincoln)
3. The Burning of Rome (E.T. Paull)
4. Queen of the Valley (Frank H. Losey)
5. The Honeymoon March (George Rosey)
6. Dove Of Peace (Harry J. Lincoln)
7. The Homecoming (E.T. Paull)
8. Vacation (Harry J. Lincoln)
9. Napoleon's Last Charge (E.T. Paull)
10. Geraldine (Henry Lodge)
This is a march/waltz composite roll, much like the evergreen rolls
distributed by Wurlitzer in the early 1920s. These are arguably one of
the most used rolls, as they were always available, and the masters to
many of these rolls still exist.
All of these songs are arranged in the Wurlitzer style of this era, and
in my opinion, the Wurlitzer style is the best; nothing has a better
sound for the carousel.
Also, all songs follow the sheet music. I did not repeat anything, or
shorten anything, unless noted in the sheet music, putting the roll at
a total of 41 minutes (with pauses for transitions from song to song),
which, although long, still would fit on a 165 spool frame. Roll 6501
is about the same length.
All songs on the roll have full Wurlitzer 166 registration, including
uniphone bells, snare drum fortissimo, brass trumpets, etc., and have
also been tested seven half-steps up the scale, which is the key that
the Wurlitzer 157 plays in.
The only problem with this "roll" is that it is currently just MIDI
files, not a roll. I'd love to get this roll cut,(and others I am
working on) to help continue the tradition of new music for music
machines. I'm not in it for the money; I'm in it for my passion for
mechanical musical instruments. I've also arranged about fifteen songs
for the A.P.P. scale, along with 125 and 150 band organ music.
I am also looking at arranging for other nickelodeon and orchestrion
scales such as the "A" and "G" roll scales, along with Artizan band
organ rolls, which currently are not being cut at all. This is to the
point that parks do not play their restored band organs for the sole
reason that their rolls are in bad shape and they need new ones.
Either that or they convert the organ.
In conclusion, I'd love to provide new music to owners of music
machines, continuing the tradition of new music, not new in the sense
of recent songs but music not found on the old rolls.
