Hi all, I purchased my first reproducing piano, a 1923 Chickering 5'8"
AMPICO, in 1967 or '68 from the daughter of the original owner, and the
second, a Milton upright Welte-Mignon, in 1968 or '69 from a part-time
player piano repair man, Joseph Korczynski. I knew Jo from the North
South Skirmish Association but I had lost contact with him and do not
recall how I found him again but it was through pianos.
Initially, I purchased through him "MelODee" 88-note rolls and Ampico
rolls that were, except for one Ampico roll, cut on white paper that
were made by Givens-Gourley, Inc. The one Ampico roll was cut on the
[glassine] mottled tan paper spoken about on the Dec. 27, 2013 posting.
I also have in my collection two or more Welte-Mignon recuts I think
were made by Larry. They do not have the name of the maker on them
but they are cut on the same tan paper. The box labels are DeLuxe
labels and the rolls have Welte-Mignon typed or stamped in red followed
by the roll number, title, composer and artist in black. I just pulled
two of these rolls out of the shelving; they are as follows:
4127 Prelude & Fugue #5 D Major V. Horowitz
964 Valse Op. 69, No. 2 Chopin Landowska
Later I and a friend, Dr. George Plassnig, purchased rolls directly
from Larry Givens. The last order that George placed unfortunately
was at the time that Larry and his wife were in the divorce process.
Larry Givens was also the editor of the [Journal of the] Society Of
Automotive Engineers (SAE). I know this because as a research engineer
for The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, Annapolis
Detachment, I was at one time a somewhat active member of the SAE.
