It would seem that an authentic, if not scientific, test could easily be
performed to test the proposed method of prolonging roll life, if it has
not been done already.
Almost anyone who collects piano rolls will have an old roll with brittle
paper (not every roll is a keeper). Apply the silicone treatment on a
good-size portion or on the whole roll, roll it up and put it away for
a year (don't forget where you put it) then get it out on your birthday
or anniversary and see what has happened.
If the roll plays well, is no longer brittle and hasn't stuck together,
we should have a useful answer!
