Duo-Art Roll C-4927-6 "Seben Come Eleben" Rag
By Jerry Wagner
I came upon an interesting Duo-Art roll. It appears to be one of the
un-cataloged test rolls mentioned on page 228 (C-xxx) of the Duo-Art
Rollography compiled by Charles Davis Smith. The rolls leader lists
three tunes, but the roll only has two. The leader has a nice picture
of the artist and his signature:
C-4927-6
SEBEN COME ELEBEN William J. Bay
BLAN NETTE WALTZ William J. Bay
WALTZ Victor Herbert
Played by Carl B. Chamberlain
Google found that the first tune was published in 1899 as a 2/4 rag
with a 2-step piano solo. Very non-PC sheet music art showing craps
players. The second tune cannot be found. Does anyone know of the
"Blan Nette Waltz"?
Carl Chamberlain was manager of the Duo-Art Department of Grinnell
Bros. Music House in Detroit. At one time, Grinnell was the "world's
largest retail music company."
My conjectures: Aeolian was pleasing one of their largest customers.
The Herbert waltz is not on the test roll. The "-6" suffix indicates
the whopping price of $3.50, but it's a small roll.
