I am currently trying to figure out the proper song lists for two
rolls I have which are mislabeled. Both are from the same maker,
and, since I now know how they were often complied, I am aware how
it happened! However, I do want to correct the labels.
The first roll is Play-Rite "Cook Roll No G-1A". Both labels say
it has 13 songs, as follows:
1. Roll On You Mississippi
2. Meet Me In St. Louis, Louis
3. Waiting For The Robert E. Lee
4. Bye Bye Black Bird
5. Alabama Bound
6. Baby Face
7. Birth Of The Blues
8. Mandy
9. Carolina In The Morning
10. Can't You Hear Me Calling Caroline
11. Down Among The Sheltering Pines
12. Cruising Down The River
13. Louisiana Hayride
My roll only has 10 songs, so, with the help of the mighty Google
and by process of elimination, I believe I now have the proper list
of songs:
1. Roll On You Mississippi
2. Meet Me In St. Louis, Louis
3. Waiting For The Robert E. Lee
4. Alabama Bound
5. Bye Bye Black Bird
6. Mandy
7. Carolina In The Morning
8. Can't You Hear Me Calling Caroline
9. Cruising Down The River
10. Louisiana Hayride
I am reasonably sure of most of these, but less so for song number 10.
Could someone else who has this roll confirm my list? I have also
sent an audio file of my roll playing song 10 (please pardon the less
than great quality) if someone knows the song well and can check my
identification.
The second mislabeled roll is Siou's Music Co. 4X-394, "New and
Review," and it is much harder, since the labels skip song number 8
completely! However, I know that song well enough to know that song 7
on the label is number 8 on the roll, so I'm missing song 7. I do hope
that is clear...!
The list I wind up with is:
1. I've Got A Feelin' You're Foolin'
2. Cheek To Cheek
3. On Treasure Island
4. Nothing Lives Longer Than Love
5. I'm In The Mood For Love
6. Red Sails In The Sunset
7.
8. From The Top Of Your Head To The Tip Of Your Toes
9. Top Hat, White Tie, And Tails
10. I Wished On The Moon
There is a line at the bottom of the label that says "Haning & White",
which I'm guessing means that they requested the roll be made.
I've checked all the listed songs, and they are correct. Unfortunately,
Google can't play a song for me if I don't have any clue to it's name!
I'm hoping that someone else has a copy of this roll and can give me a
clue, or that one of you will recognize the song in the audio clip I
have sent.
Hoping for some help with my fun little scavenger hunt,
Monica Jones
