I am sad to report that long-time Coney Island carousel operator and
owner of the West 12th Street kiddie amusements, Jimmy McCullough, has
passed away. He was a descendent of both the Tilyou and the Stubbman
families. Mr. McCullough was co-owner of the B&B Carousell along with
Mike Saltzstein.
I had met Jimmy during the early 1960`s when he owned the so-called
Steeplechase Carousel on the Boardwalk at 16th Street. At the time he
hired a young Mike Saltzstein who operated the ride. This is the
carousel that later was dismantled for its run at the 1964 New York
World`s Fair. Later, Jimmy McCullough went into partnership with Mike
Saltzstein, who operated the B&B Carousell for over thirty years.
After Mike Saltzstein passed away on July 4th, 2001, the B&B Carousell
remained closed until it was sold to the City of New York for $1.8
million.
I'm sure it must have been gratifying for Jimmy to see the return of
the B&B Carousell, completely refurbished, to Coney Island in May of
this year, and housed in exactly the same location where his
Steeplechase Carousel once stood.
Jimmy's funeral was held on Saturday, August 24th, at 10 a.m. at Maria
Regina R.C. Church, 3945 Jerusalem Avenue, Seaford, N.Y. Jimmy
McCullough was certainly a Coney Island icon, and will be missed by
many.
