I have wonderful memories of having lunch with J. Lawrence Cook at the
25th anniversary convention of the Musical Box Society in Saddlebrook,
New Jersey. I have been a member for over 45 years. He was the "Guest
of Honour" and spent hours sitting at a grand piano in the hospitality
area, taking requests and playing live in any style.
In my opinion, Mr. Cook was a musical genius. Perhaps not a composer,
but a top man in arranging, and producing most any style of performance.
In addition to his musical skills, he, at one point in the history of
QRS Music rolls, during the depths of the depression, was responsible
for keeping the doors open by working virtually all positions in the
factory.
I never have felt that J. Lawrence Cook has ever received the recognition
he is due.
