Kudos to Scotty Greene for wanting to put the piano in tune correctly
with the original pipes. It is a crime to change the pitch of these
original pipes to A-440 as they were designed to play at A-435. These
pianos are now nearing the 100 year mark and should be preserved.
I have never understood why someone would want to raise the pitch on
these pianos as I have never seen them in use with a singer (vocalist)
and, let's face it, most singers do sing flat! A-440 was a standard
pitch adopted late in manufacture of coin pianos and most all of the
coin pianos play the pipes at A-435. The only exception I know would
be the Nelson-Wiggen that had the A-440 xylophone.
It is a real shame that some technicians have tried to change the pipes
to play at A-440 as they have ruined the pipes and potential value of
the machine that has them installed. If you really want a piano to
have pipes that play at A-440 then build a new one.
