Enthusiasts of high quality, rare rags have a treat waiting with
the release of a new "G" roll arranged by Art Reblitz and produced
by Johnny's Music Rolls.
"Echoes of the Barbary Coast" was produced by John Mottoros to
commemorate the 2014 AMICA convention in San Francisco. For the
past year John, together with Tom Brier and Art Reblitz, looked at
a lengthy list of potential tunes appropriate for the theme and
mostly vintage early 1900s. The final selection is a group of popular
and lesser known hot tunes of the period with full and complete
arrangements true to the period.
Art Reblitz has done considerable arranging in the past, but not
much for coin pianos on readily available rolls. His style is very
accurate to the piece, the period, and the capabilities of the
instrument. To me, these are most reminiscent to arranging work he has
done for the Ramey Banjo Orchestra, which features similar period
pieces and style.
These are full arrangements, and the roll runs about 30 minutes, longer
than the usual coin piano roll. The roll plays equally well on G or 4X
instruments with good consideration for pipes and single strike or
repeating xylophones. This roll takes excellent advantage of the two
separate expression systems built into many coin pianos.
Additionally, Art carefully uses the two pipe registers (flute register
= xylophones on pianos so equipped) for maximum effect and carefully
avoids the constant droning of dual pipe registers present on some
original rolls. Percussion is used to good advantage.

I have no interest in this roll beyond making such a treasure available
to many, and hoping a positive response will encourage a Volume Two!
