Passing of Ray Siou, Music Roll Retailer
By T. J. Fisher
I was sorry to read of Ray Siou's death. I never did business with
him but I certainly owe him a lot of gratitude.
I work with the Wurlitzer 165 band organ at Glen Echo Park in Maryland,
which was restored in 1978 to the 165 scale after having been converted
some years earlier to play Caliola rolls. The result of this is that
the park had to restart a library of Style 165 band organ rolls from
nothing. Had Ray not made so many rolls available at reasonable
prices, I am sure we would not have been able to build the library we
have today, which includes all Wurlitzer and T.R.T. rolls known to
survive and many others.
I thought it was appropriate that I read yesterday's Digest while on
break in earshot of the organ playing a roll I believe was probably
among those bought from Ray. It is too bad that we have lost someone
who really did a lot for a subset of our field. I infer that Ray was
a bachelor, but is there anyone other than a spouse to whom we might
send condolences?
