The first time I received a roll list from Ray Siou, it contained one
of his rants that Matthew mentioned, and I thought, "What a nasty man
he must be."
Was I ever wrong -- he was truly one of the nicest people I ever
encountered in this business, and with 40-plus years at Knoebels,
I've met quite a few!
I remember all the rolls (must be a thousand or more) I purchased
from Ray. What size tee shirt did I wear -- I thought that was an odd
question, until every box came with plenty of tee shirts mixed in with
the rolls, and lots and lots of cassette tapes and videos galore.
Then there were the boxes themselves: chicken boxes, clearly marked to
be stored at 31 degrees. We got many calls from the post office to get
in right away, because they couldn't store them and didn't want all
that chicken spoiling inside!
When I got diabetes some 20 or more years ago, Ray said it would be
okay, he had it too, you just have to give lots of shots and you'll
live a long time. And so he did.
After Charles Smallwood's passing, Ray wrote a farewell to him, and
stuck it on the back of a roll box, something about one less phone
call to take, one less guy saying, "When are you going to cut some
more rolls?"
Rest in peace, my friend, we will all miss you...
