Barrel Piano in "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn"
By Charles Davis
Hello MMDers, A few weeks ago I was watching a movie on television
called "A Tree Grows In Brooklyn" (1945). In that movie were several
scenes with children outside of a bar or restaurant. They were
reflecting on what their father did over many years for people in that
part of New York. This was, obviously, about life in that part of the
country. From the inside or the outside areas of the bar I could hear
strains of what I think was some kind of barrel piano or equivalent
instrument being played during those scenes of the movie. Does anyone
out there have any knowledge of what this instrument might have been?
