Seeburg KT Special Rewind Problem
By Don Teach
I was somewhat surprised when no one offered a solution to the
problem of a Seeburg piano staying in rewind. If someone wants to
try to repair this then I hope they are somewhat familiar with player
pianos and how they work.
There are two nipples coming out of the rewind unit that control the
play and rewind valves. They are not always in the same place on
the unit. I would think that they are both on the top side in a KT
Special. It's been a while since I looked at one. Then there is a
nipple that goes to the shut off for vacuum. There is the large nipple
that is sometimes referred to as the supply. The supply should have
a pretty strong vacuum to it, pulling close to twenty inches of water
lift.
The valve that makes the unit stay in rewind has an opening on the back
of the unit that is usually covered or sealed during play by a small
pneumatic with a finger on it closing off the port to the rewind valve.
It also has a small piece of music wire in the hinge end acting as a
spring to close this pneumatic. The little pneumatic next to it is
used to open it. Should this start to leak then the unit will go into
rewind and stay in rewind.
The unit probably needs to be removed from the piano for service. If
the small pneumatic somehow gets stuck next to it then it would hold
the pneumatic with the finger and disc open. I know all this is clear
as mud without the actual unit in your hands.
