Because of MMD, I recently became aware of one of the incredibly rare
9 1/2-foot Steinway ex-Duo-Arts that had recently turned up. After
examining it, I found it to be in even better condition than I could
reasonably hope for, and I bought it.
The very worst thing about the piano is the condition of its legs. As
a Duo-Art, it had the double legs, and after ninety years of being
pushed back and forth to different locations, the poor legs have had
the life kicked out of them, and all the glued joints have come loose.
I know that while the case is on sawhorses, I will be able to knock the
legs apart and re-glue them. But I am wondering whether anyone on MMD
knows of a set of double legs for sale that go on a Steinway Duo-Art.
Many Steinway Duo-Arts are converted to look like non-players by
putting a single leg on each corner. So if anyone knows of a set of
double legs from a Steinway Duo-Art, please contact me.
Another reason I am making this request is that years ago some
technician had a problem with the legs not being quite strong enough
for a 9.5" piano that was also being moved occasionally. His solution
was to drill a half-inch hole through the middle of each of the six
legs, and bolt on iron-rod braces that would go from the leg to the
bottom of the case at a 45-degree angle. Since the legs are in that
rough a condition, you can understand why I am looking for a set of
legs that were never worked on.
