Brian Chesters asks about collections in the Beijing area. Prior
to a visit some a few years ago I had been told that a collection of
mechanical music existed within the Forbidden City. Our guide knew
nothing of this but made enquiries and found that such a collection
did exist, and obtained permission for just my wife and me to visit.
What a disappointment! The collection was housed in a gloomy room that
looked as though it had not been opened for twenty years and the items
were covered in thick layer of dust. From what could be seen, some
were very exotic examples, probably given as presents by visiting heads
of state.
We were not permitted to open any of the boxes, but one that was open
revealed a fine sublime harmony movement with in excess of 150 teeth
per comb. In the front of the case was a clock/automaton but it was
too dirty to see any detail. The rest of the collection -- about 40
to 50 items in total -- were in similar condition. What a shame that
these instruments are being left to rot away!
I realise that this information is not what Brian wanted to hear, but
if he is offered the chance to visit this collection my advice would be
'don't bother'.
