I have looked through my Ampico rolls and see that I have the "Rhapsody
in Blue" on one of the Powells' rolls, Klavier No. 40073-P. It is not
a jumbo size, perhaps because the speed is 60. At least I do not have
to change the rolls as I do on my Duo-Art version and the reproduction
is just a little more reliable.
I have never played an Ampico roll and have notes drop out or been
disappointed with the reproduction. Once set up, the Ampico seems to
go on and on without problems. I find it almost impossible to set up
my Duo-Art so that every roll plays perfectly. Having said that, the
vast majority do play well, and a well coded duo-art roll is hard to
beat. Also, the reproduction can be very life-like as opposed to some
Ampico rolls which can sound a little too slick at times. However, it
would be an agonising choice for me if I had to sell one of them.
I digress somewhat. I have "An American in Paris" on Duo-Art,
Play-Rite recut rolls numbers 7647 and 7648. I believe they may have
converted from the Ampico version. They are demanding on the Duo-Art
and I expect the Ampico originals would be better to have. However,
I like the music and am lucky to have the rolls.
