Mechanical Music on Television
By Rowland Lee

The BBC in the UK is currently showing a drama series called
"Ripper Street", set in the East End of London in 1889. I believe
it is also showing currently on BBC America.

In episode 4, 'The Good of This City', there is a scene set in the
recreation room of a rather grim asylum; a roll is being pedalled
on what looks to be a Model W Aeolian Orchestrelle. It would appear
that the instrument was recorded 'live'. I know that the series was
filmed in Dublin, but I don't know the actual location for this scene.

Despite the fact that the period in which this series is set would
be too early for an Orchestrelle, It was very gratifying to see the
instrument being used in this way.
