Hello from cold, snow covered, Butler, Pennsylvania. I asked the
same question a few years ago about renting out band organs. Like
Mr. Goodale, I too have been trying to "make a buck" or two with my
band organ for the past four years.
When I do take it to different events, for free, I hear the same thing
every time: "You built this yourself, by hand? That is beautiful and
it sounds great. Do you have a business card?"
I went through a box of 250 business cards but not one call ever came
in. It's a good thing I did not hold my breath. What all this means
is that everyone likes it and would like to have it play at their event
as long as it's free.
When I do have it set up and playing, I notice older people will stop,
look and listen, and a family with kids will stop. Teenagers? Forget
it! They will walk right by and not even look at it. It's time to get
another box of business cards printed; maybe this summer will be a
little better.
The only thing I can suggest is to get it out in the public to be seen
and heard, even if you have to play it for free. Talk it up to anyone
who will listen. A friend of mine says I am crazy to play it at events
for free, with all the money I have tied up in it. He says I should
charge $800 to $900, but I can't get $100 or less out of people.
No one is going to see it, or hear it, if it is setting in my back
bedroom... Get my point?
Good luck,
Joe Kemph
