Fabricating Swaged Pins for Music Roll Spools
By John Grant

In MMD 130201, John Tuttle asks about swaged pins for music roll
spools. John, you have the terminology correct, the process for
forming the "ears" on those pins is correctly called "swaging". The
solution to your problem requires a little out-of-the-box thinking.

Basically what you need is the same sort of drive chuck geometry
found on the (typical) Ampico take-up spool right-hand (drive) end,
only swapping the male and female features. (This is starting to sound
a little dirty!) As it happens, I have (only) two of the pins with the
swaged ears you require; I got them years ago, probably from PPCo, as
you may have as well.

If you will take the pins you have and drill or mill a 1/16" cross hole
at an appropriate distance from the (now) "plain" end, you can then
insert a 1/16" rolled or split pin.

I measured the "ear" thickness on my pins at 0.047", so the rolled
pin, at 0.062" , might require you to file the slot in the transmission
receiver slightly to accommodate the pin. If you don't have the
machinery to do this, I can work you up a price for your two dozen
pins.

Alternatively, you might try contacting Brian Thornton at Short
Mountain Music Works (www.shortmountainmusic.com). Brian bought Ed
Schmidt's organette roll re-cutting business last year. It included
a swager setup to make similar pins for some of the formats Ed was
making.

I don't know what diameter pin(s) Ed used for his rolls or whether the
swager is adjustable for the size pins you and I have which. If
they're the same (and I think they are) it is an odd-ball 0.202"
[13/64"] diameter.

Good luck!
John Grant
