Keyboard Touch Weight of Duo-Art Grand Piano
By D. L. Bullock
All Steinways had a heavier keyboard weight than many other brands.
The extra length of Duo-Art Steinway keys makes this even more
pronounced.
Every key in the keyboard has weights in it, as a rule. This adds
inertia to the movement and, since most of the weights are at the back
of the key, it makes the pressure needed to depress the key greater.
This is a common problem on older Steinways as the owners develop
arthritis and suffer pain when practicing.
The solution I have practiced many times is to re-weight the keyboard:
remove weights from the back of the keys and occasionally add some to
the front end. I have a set of gram weights so I can precisely control
gram weight. I can also do some regulation magic that can make it
easier to press. I have several very happy Steinway customers who
continue to play the piano after arthritis strikes.
