It was with great sadness to learn of Arno's passing and the world
of mechanical music has lost a rather special talent.
Many within the fraternity have their own ideas on what relates to
restoration, conservation or preservation. But we have all seen work
that has been lauded as "better than when it was new", however the
aesthetic reality is they are as glitzy as a Vegas strip. Many a fine
box has been ruined in this manner.
Having studied Arno's work on several musical boxes, he seemingly had
a unique talent to get the finish "just right" and leave the instrument
with a crisp, factory-fresh finish as if it had only just been machined.
The case work was also done to an equally exacting standard and, from
the boxes I listened to, they also played correctly.
