In 121227 Mechanical Music Digest, Steve Greatrex asked about USB
MIDI Drivers for Android Devices. This does not answer his question
directly, but I can offer a comment on the general issue of driving
MIDI mechanical instruments with smaller devices.
I'm moving toward a MIDI driven system in a future crank organ and
I did an experiment to see if I can use my early ASUS Eee PC netbook
as a MIDI player. I had installed Win XP on it, although it came
with a Linux system.
I found that I could send MIDI files to a keyboard using Windows Media
Player and a cheap USB-to-MIDI cable interface which I had purchased
on the Internet. That means I have in hand a usable, if not optimal,
SD Card MIDI file player. A Windows netbook and cable cost only about
$210 which is less than the $300 or so being charged for the SD Card
MIDI readers made in Germany.
Windows Media Player may be a useful option for users not wanting to
buy editing software. I don't know if it is part of the Windows 8
system for handheld devices, but if it is, it may open up quite a
collection of potential driver devices.
I have not tested any other driving software with the netbook at this
time, but if Media Player works then more sophisticated Windows
programs should work with the mini-hardware.
