Replacement Motors for Electric Player Pianos
By Nathan Woodhull

On the original roll frame that was sold by Player Piano Company
(PPCo) that was a copy of the one made by Coinola, PPCo supplied
a 110-volt "fan duty" motor. This motor would overheat quite easily
so we came up with a solution. We used a 220-volt "fan duty" motor,
1140 RPM, 1/2 HP, and shifted the current phase by installing a larger
capacitor. This worked well and the motor got barely warm.

I don't know if this exact combination would have enough power to
turn an Ampico or Duo-Art pump, but you get the idea. In other words,
use a 220-volt motor but run it on 110 volts. Increase the horsepower
sufficiently to overcome the voltage drop and increase the size of the
capacitor to shift the phase for more starting torque and it might just
work.
