Piano Rolls Are Damaged During Rewind
By Marc Goodman
Hello -- Regarding rolls tearing on rewind, I once again offer this
advice. I think it is not a good idea to glue the left spool flange
in place. A spool flange wrapped with tape gives one flexibility and
aid in tamping the roll to the right side.
As I have been playing rolls on many pianos over 60 years let me make
a suggestion: remove immediately the lower brake so there is less
tension on the old paper on rewind.
Pull out the left spool flange and put some tape around it so that,
after tamping down the roll paper towards the right spool flange, you
can then pull the left spool out a quarter-inch or so before playing.
This way the paper has some room to go back and forth on rewind. When
the rolls were new the paper was not so brittle and could take it.
In all these years I have almost never torn a roll!
Happy Christmas and New Year
Best,
Marc Goodman
