Value of Hupfeld Solophonola Upright Player Piano
By Bob Hodge
Hi, I'm trying to figure out if I'm pursuing a fools' errand or not.
But then I was once one that did that sort of thing regularly, as
long as it didn't cost a lot of money...
A friend has one of these instruments that had supposedly been
restored by competent technician some years ago. It was donated to
a nonprofit organization that he works for as a tax donation from the
owner's estate. When it arrived it was horribly out of tune and it
was determined that the pin block was severely damaged (split?).
Large sections won't hold tune at all.
Is a replacement block for this instrument worthwhile? What would
the approximate cost of a new block if I were to do the "simple things"
to make the installation more easily done by a professional restorer?
Personally, I find the piano fascinating for the beautiful design of
the player mechanism. Is this an expression piano and are the Hupfeld
rolls available for it or are they so rare as to be unobtainable?
The friend is looking to other knowledgeable people whether or not a
repair can be attempted, so I'm not trying to circumvent his efforts,
but again, I find this instrument to be technically fascinating and
I would give it a home if it were to go begging. Naturally I hope he
can work something out as it will be appreciated where it is right now
if he can. Thanks in advance for any advice!
