Hello MMD'rs, Even though my primary interest is the early musical
box, and complicated mechanisms in general, I enjoy reading all of the
topics and postings on MMD. I am writing because of the recent flurry
of comments regarding the controversy over the Mermod Freres logo.
Many years ago, when I was beginning to learn the art of antique music
box restoration, I asked my father, Christian Eric, the same question
as has been posed by Matthew Caulfield and others. Dad's reply was so
self evident I have never had any reason to question it since, and it
may even be published in one of his old articles in the MBSI Technical
Journal.
Anyway, the answer is simply that the "MF" logo has a large "S"
entwined around a cross simply signifying the town in which all Mermod
products were created: Ste. Croix (in French), which translates to
"Holy Cross" (in English), as is signified by the cross and the "S".
Sincerely,
Arn Eric - Antique Music Box Restoration
