It seems to me that some confusion may have crept into the discussion
of the cylinder movement cleaned by Robert Patoine. (Incidentally,
the cleaning mixture used seemed to me a bit aggressive, though
doubtless efficacious in the short term.)
We now know that the correct serial number for it is 10961; if the
movement were indeed one by Nicole Frères then Chart 11, page 135,
of Bulleid's book, "Musical Box Tune Sheets", shows that it would have
been made in about 1831.
The photographs show that we are dealing with a lever wound box having
six bells in view struck by butterfly strikers and having a ribbed
base, presumably of cast iron. This suggests a movement considerably
later than 1831, perhaps in the 1880s or thereabouts.
The point is of course that a serial number alone does not give any
positive information about the maker. The charts in the same book by
Bulleid show, for example, that the serial number 10961 corresponds
with a date of roughly 1899 if made by BH Abrahams, 1883 if made by
Baker-Troll or 1869 if made by Bremond, etc.
Various features in the photographs suggest a movement made in the
1870s to 1890s; the serial number would therefore rule that it was not
made by Nicole Frères, but the features revealed by the photographs
do not allow any particular maker to be assigned to it.
Best regards,
Noel Gale, GB
