Dear Bill, Greetings From The Bronx! Congratulations on your
upcoming undertaking. Most, if not all, perforated musical media
should be scanned and cataloged for future generations.
First of all, are your Estey rolls of the Non-Registering type,
10-1/8 inches wide, or the Self-Registering type, 10-3/4 inches wide?
The Non-Registering type are pretty much straight-forward: two
staggered rows of holes on the tracker bar of 58 notes each, and they
each run chromatically from C to A.
The Self-Registering rolls are a whole 'nother animal. They have
two staggered rows of holes, the top row having 63 notes (4-61 [58]
playing notes representing the Swell Keyboard), while the bottom row
has 62 notes (3-60 [58] playing notes representing the Great Keyboard
with the lowest 12 notes also representing the Pedal Keyboard).
Attached you will find a page that I excerpted from Bower's
"Encyclopedia of Mechanical Musical Instruments", page 405, with
additional information I inserted from page 393. The main body of the
page explains the stop/combination workings of the additional holes on
the tracker bar. I hope you will find some of this helpful.
Sincerely,
D. F. Rowe
