In 121108 MMD, Bob Billings stated very eloquently some fundamental
truths about new music roll copies of old originals, and discussed
why and how better rolls are possible today. I totally agree with
Bob's views on that topic. I would like to add my voice to expand
briefly on what was discussed.
Some collectors may not be aware that nearly all Ampico rolls made
from about 1930 until the end of production were perforated on Aeolian
equipment. As Bob pointed out, Aeolian equipment of that era turned
out large numbers of poorly made rolls. Things went from bad to worse
as the depression wore on -- production shops frequently cut corners,
and maintenance needs of aging equipment were often ignored.
For many years, Precision Music Rolls has carried a line of Ampico
rolls featuring popular and show tunes from the 1930s. Much experience
has been gained with rolls made on Aeolian equipment of that era. As
Bob pointed out, modern technology, along with some tender loving care,
can all but eliminate the deficiencies found in old originals. We have
been told by many of our customers that our rolls often play better
than their original Ampico counterparts.
Precision Music Rolls is proud to be part of a new generation of roll
makers, and we are committed to making the finest rolls possible.
