Hurricane Sandy and Steinway & Sons
By Dick Merchant
Does anybody know if Steinway was damaged by the Hurricane Sandy?
[ The MMD does not normally publish items not directly related
[ to mechanical music, but I am personally interested in the
[ answer to this question and I think Dick makes a good case that
[ others will too when he added the text which follows. --Jody
A large number of us who regularly read MMD are intensely interested in
Steinway Duo-Arts and Chickering Ampicos and the like. Steinway is one
of the few old line American piano makers that were involved with player
pianos in the day that are still in business. Steinway was a big part
of the lore of the reproducing piano & I feel their fate during the
record breaking storm is very relevant to MMD. Aeolian started putting
their player mechanisms in Steinways pianos somewhere around 1910 and
did so up into the 1930's. I'm sure many of your readers are very
concerned about the fate of the famed piano maker. This storm may have
destroyed their factory; we don't know. Nobody out there in the mass
media seems to care. There is no Steinway dealer within several hundred
miles from my home to ask.
